Tibetan Buddhist Monks Visit Westminster College

Posted on Monday, October 21, 2002

Westminster College recently hosted a group of visiting Tibetan Buddhist Monks.

The group, which is touring a variety of locations across the United States, includes: an American, who acts as their tour manager; two "geshes," which is the highest academic rank that can be achieved in Tibetan Buddhist education system; three others of lower rank, and a translator.

While on campus, the seven stayed at the home of Dr. Ann Coble, an assistant professor of Christian education and religion, who was off-campus at an academic conference. Dr. Bryan Rennie, associate professor of religion and philosophy at Westminster College, led the campus tour, which included lunch and a chapel service.

The Gaden Shartse Monastery, the home monastery of the group, is located in Mundgod, Karnataka State in Southwest India, and is headed by the Dalai Lama.
