Biology Professor Continues Faculty Forum

Posted on Tuesday, October 29, 2002

Dr. Joshua Corrette-Bennett, assistant professor of biology at Westminster College, continues Faculty Forum Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 11:30 a.m. in Patterson Hall room 311.

His talk, "Information Literacy; Fact and Fiction? Ink and Interviews?" focuses on what the biology department at Westminster College is trying to do with information literacy in the field of natural sciences.

"We are living in an age where information can be obtained by just pressing a button," said Corrette-Bennett. "We plug in certain parameters and computerized search engines do the rest for us.

"What is the source of all this information? Does each academic discipline rely on the same types of sources? Are all these sources reliable? How do we get students to test the waters' and get their feet wet' without having them get sucked into the information maelstrom and become lost in the undertow? How do we get students to use all the resources that are available, and still have them analyze and evaluate each source?" continued Corrette-Bennett. "These are questions all educators have to think about."

Corrette-Bennett, who joined the Westminster College faculty in 2001, earned his undergraduate degree from Bates College, and his Ph.D. from Brandeis University.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Corrette-Bennett at (724) 946-7208 or e-mail bennetjc@westminter.edu.
