Susan Shafer to Give Concert at Westminster College

Posted on Wednesday, April 11, 2001

Susan Shafer, an artist in residence at Westminster College, will give a concert Saturday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.

Shafer's program centers on a Shakespearean theme with Gerald Finzi's "Let Us Garlands Bring." Finzi took five of Shakespeare's texts and set them to music. Shafer will sing the same texts by other composers.

In the third part of the concert, Shafer will sing excerpts from Verdi's "Falstaff" which is based on Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Shafer, a 1974 Westminster College graduate, has performed to great acclaim with opera companies throughout North America and Europe. She has appeared with the Paris Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Kentucky Opera, New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Cleveland Opera, Baltimore Opera, Sarasota Opera, and Washington Opera. She has also performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony, National Symphony, Prague Symphony, and Juilliard Symphony.

Shafer is the winner of numerous awards and scholarships, most notably from the Pavarotti Competition, Shoshanna Foundation, Metropolitan Opera Regional Auditions, San Francisco.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Westminster College Department of Music at (724) 946-7270.
