German Aerospace Engineer to Discuss International Science in Space

Posted on Monday, April 23, 2001

Westminster College will host Christoph Bartscher, the 2001 Robert M. Woods Lecturer and aerospace engineer from the Technical University of Munich, Germany, Thursday, May 3, at 7 p.m. in Hoyt Science Resources Center room 116.

Bartscher was involved in several space physics experiments using both the NASA shuttle spacelab and the Russian MIR. His presentations will give a short overview of the United States and Russian cultural and technical differences, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of short versus long duration missions.

Photos of the Russian launch site at Baikonur, and a description of his most recent experiment on strange properties of fluids near the thermodynamic critical point will also be discussed.

The Woods Memorial Lecture honors Dr. Robert M. Woods, professor of physics at Westminster College from 1947-72. It is made possible by a gift from the Woods family that has been supplemented over the years by gifts from friends and alumni.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. William L. Johnson, professor of physics at Westminster College, at (724) 946-7201.
