Dr. Sherese Newell has been named director of DEI education and bias prevention at Westminster College.

Newell, who joined Westminster’s staff on Jan. 22, will oversee DEI education on campus and partner with faculty members to provide a robust offering of cultural programs. She will also administer the anti-bias grievance process and advise the College’s identity-based student organizations, Black Student Union (BSU) and Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA).

For her doctoral dissertation, Newell conducted extensive research on diversity, equity and inclusion, focusing on culturally responsive pedagogical practices. She earned her Ph.D. in instructional management and leadership from Robert Morris University in 2023.

Prior to joining Westminster, Newell had served as the crisis counselor of Sharon City School District and was clinical director of Western Pennsylvania Childcare/Mid-Atlantic Youth Services. She also spent time as a substance abuse counselor with Discovery House, a prevention specialist and blended case manager for the Mercer County Behavioral Health Commission, and a multisystemic therapy therapist with Adelphoi Village.

Newell also served as a previous classroom guest lecturer at Westminster, speaking to students about managing diversity in the workplace and developing culturally responsive work environments.

“Sherese brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our division, and we are excited to have her join our team,” said Dr. Gina Vance, vice president for student affairs and dean of students. “I am confident that she will help create a sense of belonging for all students within the campus community.”

Newell earned her undergraduate degree in human development and family studies from Pennsylvania State University and a master’s in psychology from the University of Phoenix.

Newell resides with her family in Hermitage, Pa. To reach Newell, please contact her at 724-946-7179 or newellsg@westminster.edu.
