Westminster College will host 450 high school musicians at the 20th Annual Music Performance Assessment Festival on Tuesday, March 8.
The Music Performance Assessment provides an opportunity for music educators in the public schools to bring their ensembles to Westminster to perform, sight read and be evaluated by a panel of music judges.
This is the 20th year that Dr. Richard Tad Greig, professor of music and band director, has hosted this event, providing musical performing assessment for area bands and orchestras. Eight different school districts will be in attendance.
“I am extremely proud of the lineage of this event at Westminster College,” said Greig. “When I first started hosting this event, there were very few opportunities such as this available to my colleagues. It is very important that we in the collegiate community offer opportunities for growth and development to our colleagues and their students in the schools.”
One of Greig’s positions with the state music assessment committee is to approve submitted music and to assign its categorization, by difficulty level, on the state list.
“As an advocate for music education and the significance of music and the arts as core subjects, it is extremely significant that we provide opportunities for these students to be tested and evaluated in this area,” said Greig. “Creating communities of individuals who share their advocacy and appreciation for the creative and performing arts is a win for Westminster, for the community and for our youth.”
Along with this festival, Westminster College also hosts the District Five Honors Chorus and Honors Band every year.
