The New Castle Lyric Opera (NCLO), in collaboration with Opera Westminster, will present Katharina von Bora, a "Pop opera" at 7:30 p.m., November 7 in William W. Orr Auditorium. The event is open to the public.

“The friendliness and helpfulness of members of the NCLO board, who are playing small roles, interacting with us, assisting in rehearsals, helping with costuming and set design, and generally filling in when needed, is beyond amazing especially in a production of this size,” said Dr. Anne Bentz, stage director and associate professor of music. “It has been a pleasure working with them on a production of this size.”

Written and conducted by Mihai Valcu, adjunct faculty member, the Opera Westminster ensemble, and orchestra of student and guest musicians, students, guest soloists, and community singers will bring the story of Katharina von Bora to life during the performance.

Most commonly known as “The First Lady of the Reformation,” von Bora is the focus of this opera as the wife and helpmate of one of the most important figures in the protestant Reformation, Martin Luther.

“The opera will be translated into German for submission for performance at the 500th anniversary of the onset of the Protestant Reformation in 2017,” continued Bentz.

College students receive a complimentary ticket and others can purchase tickets for $10 at the show, or by contacting Bentz at (724) 946-6045 or bentzah@westminster.edu, or by contacting NCLO at (724) 714-3003.
