Symphony Orchestra to Present Spring Concert

The Westminster College Symphony Orchestra will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 30 in Orr Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

The program includes “Overture” to The Magic Flute by W. Mozart; “Romanza” from Tuba Concerto by R. Vaughan Williams; “Tornami a Vagheggiar” from Alcina by G. Handel; In the Steppes of Central Asia by A. Borodin; and Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 by E. Grieg.

Featured students are Kyle Grabigel on the tuba and Danielle Smith, soprano. Faculty participating in the orchestra are Dr. Robert Knop, associate professor of physics and music, on viola; Dr. Daniel Perttu, associate professor and chair of Westminster’s Department of Music, on bassoon; Dr. Timothy Winfield, assistant professor, on trumpet; and Dr. R. Tad Greig, associate professor and band director, on trombone.

The orchestra is conducted by Dr. Melinda Crawford Perttu, assistant professor of Music.

Crawford Perttu, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2009, directs the symphony orchestra and the Ceól na Teud Scottish string music group, teaches the string pedagogy sequence as well as private violin and viola lessons, and supervises the weekly string master class. She earned an undergraduate degree from Duquesne University and a master's and doctorate from the Ohio State University.

Miranda Nash, a first year music education major, is a daughter of Keith and Nancy Nash and a graduate of Camp Hill High School.  She plays first violin.

Audrey Nickle, a first year biology major, is a daughter of John and Carol Nickle and a graduate of Carlisle High School. She plays viola.  

Freedom, PA
Joseph Barber, a junior music major, is a son of Joseph and Gretchen Barber and a graduate of Ambridge Area High School.  He plays oboe.

Lisa Orr, a first year music education major, is a daughter of Douglas and Anne Orr and a graduate of Shaler Area High School.  She plays first violin.

Amber Wunderlin, a junior music major, is a daughter of Kenneth and Jamie Wunderlin and a graduate of Shaler Area High School.  She plays clarinet.

Joseph Bandi, a sophomore music education and music performance major, is a son of Joseph and Debbie Bandi and a graduate of West Allegheny High School.  He plays French horn.

Deborah Heyl, a sophomore music education major, is a daughter of Brian and Monica Heyl and a graduate of West Allegheny High School.  She plays piccolo and flute.

Ashleigh Nealer, a first year music education major, is a daughter of John and Kathy Nealer and a graduate of Indiana Area High School.  She plays first violin and is the concertmaster.

Zachary Harper, a junior music education major, is a son of Dennis and Christine Harper and a graduate of Montour High School.  He plays trumpet.

Matthew Younger, a sophomore music education major, is a son of Elmer and Laura Younger and a graduate of Shenango High School.  He plays tuba.

Anne Trombetta, a first year exploratory major, is a daughter of William and Janet Trombetta and a graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School.  She plays first violin.

Scott Webler, a junior music education major, is a son of Martin and Cynthia Webler and a graduate of Mount Lebanon High School.  He plays percussion and timpani.

Rebecca Zdilla, a sophomore biology and biochemistry major, is a daughter of James and Kathryn Zdilla and a graduate of Butler Area High School.  She plays second violin.
