Student Philanthropy Program to Host G.I.V.E. Day

Posted on Wednesday, February 1, 2012

The Westminster College Student Philanthropy Program will host G.I.V.E. Day Tuesday, Feb. 14, from 2-5 p.m. in the Witherspoon Maple Room of McKelvey Campus Center.

What students and their families pay to attend Westminster covers about 70% of the actual cost.  A significant portion of the balance is covered by contributions to The Westminster Fund from generous alumni and friends.

G.I.V.E. Day (Give. Involve. Value. Engage.), also known as "Tuition Freedom Day," is the day of the year when tuition coverage ends and giving from Westminster alumni and friends covers the remainder of the cost.  Students will be encouraged to:
• Give financially.  Make Westminster a philanthropic priority throughout your life.
• Involve yourself with your time and talent.
• Value your degree and protect your personal investment.
• Engage with students, fellow alumni, and Westminster students throughout your lifetime.

The event is coordinated by Westminster Fund staff Kelli McKee, director, and Amber Scalfari, assistant director, and includes a number of activities:
• "Play It Forward" video showcase and awards will highlight thank-you videos created by sophomores
• Door Decorating Contest awards will be given for the most creative doors in student and faculty/staff categories
• Write a thank-you postcard
• Meet with Westminster Alumni Council members

Students will have the opportunity to sign their class banner, take photo booth pictures with friends, and enjoy music, food, and giveaways.

"Our goal is to engage the entire campus community in the education and encouragement of students in the development of attitudes of philanthropic awareness and service through the investment of time, talent, and financial resources," McKee said.  "We hope to create a culture and community of pride, loyalty, and philanthropy among current Westminster students that strengthens, deepens, and intensifies as they transition to the ranks of Westminster alumni."
