Spanish Professor Selected to Grade Advanced Placement Exams

Posted on Friday, June 10, 2011

Dr. Camila Bari de López, Westminster College associate professor of Spanish, was selected to participate in the annual reading and scoring of the College Board's advanced placement (AP) examinations in Spanish.

The College Board's AP program provides an opportunity for nearly two million capable high school students to take rigorous college-level courses and examinations in a range of subjects.  Based on their exam performance, successful students can receive credit and/or advanced placement when they enter college.

This year, over 3.2 million examinations were evaluated by more than 10,000 AP readers, who are professional educators from universities and high schools across the United States, Canada, and abroad.  The AP reading is a unique forum that fosters and strongly encourages an academic dialogue between high school and college educators.

"It was a very intensive task but it gave me the opportunity to participate in interesting discussions and panels about assessment of foreign language teaching and learning," López said.

"The reading draws upon the talents of some of the finest teachers and professors the world has to offer," said Trevor Packer, vice president of the College Board's AP program.  "It fosters professionalism, allows for the exchange of ideas, and strengthens the commitment to students and to teaching.  We are very grateful for the contributions of talented educators like Dr. López."

López, who joined the Westminster faculty in 1997, earned an undergraduate degree from Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Argentina, and Ph.D. from the University at Albany.
