Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence to Participate in Skype Presentation

Posted on Tuesday, October 5, 2010

Dr. Yehuda Peled, Westminster College Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence, will be one of four panelists presenting via Skype at the 52nd annual national Mountain Plains Management Conference Friday, Oct. 8.

The presentation is part of a roundtable discussion describing research on "Institutional Characteristics and Faculty Perceptions of Student Academic Dishonesty" and is based on the results of an e-mail survey from 373 faculty at six higher education institutions that revealed problems with student academic dishonesty at those schools.

Eleven scenarios of plagiarism were posed and faculty indicated the corrective action they would take with the student. Professors followed institutional policy but exercised discretion in handling specific cases of plagiarism. They engaged in varying levels of discussion, written communication, and actions as part of the hidden curriculum to address the problem. Repeat offenders were given the most punitive sanctions.

Peled, who is head of the Information Studies Department at Western Galilee College in Israel, is teaching at Westminster for the 2010-2011 academic year as part of the Fulbright Program, a federally-funded exchange program administered by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and those of other countries.
