Education Professor Recognized as "Teacher of Honor"

Posted on Thursday, July 29, 2010

Dr. SoYoung Kang, Westminster College assistant professor of education, received the Teacher of Honor Award from Kappa Delta Pi, international honor society in education.

To earn the designation, an educator must have more than three years classroom teaching experience; submit evidence of professional development, leadership, community service, and meaningful contribution to the education profession; and demonstrate a commitment to integrity and high standards in the classroom. The award recognizes teachers of all levels (early childhood to university) and is presented to a select group of remarkable educators.

"Great teachers change lives by inspiring students to recognize their gifts and to learn how to use them to pursue a worthy dream," said Kappa Delta Pi International President Dr. Nathan Bond. "Professor Kang is one such teacher."

"I feel honored to be selected as a Teacher of Honor, as this award is competitive and recognized internationally," Kang said.

"Dr. Kang's instruction is effective because she uses pedagogically sound teaching methods," said Dr. Linda Domanski, associate professor and chair of Westminster's Department of Education. "She is a gifted discussion leader and course evaluations show that her teaching is valued by her students."

Kang, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2007, earned an undergraduate degree from Korea University and master's and Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee. She is a co-editor and author of a chapter in Poverty, Education and Development.
