23rd Annual Christy Lecture Features "Mr. McFeely"

Posted on Wednesday, February 17, 2010

David Newell, better known to millions as "Mr. McFeely," will present "Mr. Rogers' Legacy: Being a Caring Neighbor to Children and Families" at the Wayne H. Christy Memorial Lecture at Westminster's Vespers service Sunday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. in Wallace Memorial Chapel. The service is free and open to the public.

Music will be provided by Westminster's Men's Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Robin Lind, associate professor and director of choral activities.

Newell's commitment to children's television spans nearly 45 years. Through the use of puppets, video clips, and conversation as "Mr. McFeely," he will share his experience as part of the ministry of the long-running children's show Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.

No matter whether his busy schedule included a delivery by kayak or retuning a llama to the zoo, "Mr. McFeely" was recognizable by his "Speedy Delivery!" greeting.

"Mr. McFeely" will join preschool children and their parents for a Purple Panda Party Monday, March 1, at 9:10 a.m. in the Witherspoon Maple Room of the McKelvey Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public; reservations are not necessary.

The Wayne H. Christy Memorial Lecture series honors the late Dr. Christy, who was a long-time faculty member and chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Westminster College. As Dr. Christy dedicated his life to relating the heritage of faith to the emerging issues of a changing culture, the lecture series seeks out men and women who distinguish themselves by relating Christian faith to issues of contemporary life.
