Bands to Present Concert Feb. 27

Posted on Tuesday, February 24, 2009

The Westminster College Wind Ensemble, Chamber Wind Ensemble, and Symphonic Band will present an evening of instrumental music Friday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Chamber Wind Ensemble is a group that includes flutes, oboes, clarinets, and horns. It is under the direction of David Tessmer, Westminster flute instructor, who recently formed the group.

"In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these ensembles were the precursors of our modern-day bands," explained Dr. R. Tad Greig, Westminster assistant professor of music and director of bands.

The 45-member Wind Ensemble will perform established and newer works for band. Included in the program is "Fantasies on a Theme of Haydn," which the ensemble will perform at the Pennsylvania State Music conference in April.

The 89-member Symphonic Band will perform selections from composers Claude T. Smith, Clare Grundman, Johannes Brahms, and Alfred Reed.

Greig directs the Wind Ensemble and the Symphonic Band.

"Each of the ensembles has been preparing diligently for this concert," Greig said. "The diversity of the literature will provide the audience with a variety of music to enjoy. I look forward to the performance and to sharing the stage with David Tessmer."
