Professors Elected to National Council

Posted on Monday, February 23, 2009

Westminster College faculty members Dr. Terri Lenox and Dr. Sandra Webster were elected to three-year terms as councilors for the Council for Undergraduate Research (CUR).

Lenox, associate professor of computer science and co-director of Westminster's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, was elected to her first term in the Computer Science Division. Webster, professor of psychology and faculty development officer, was re-elected to her second term in CUR's Psychology Division.

"I'm excited about the research opportunities that CUR provides for Westminster faculty and students," Lenox said. "As a co-director of the Drinko Center, I see the strong value of undergraduate research to all involved and am looking forward to promoting undergraduate research to a wider audience."

CUR supports and promotes high-quality undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship. The councilors' involvement will help lead to new developments in the programs, meetings, and benefits CUR offers.

"Serving on CUR Council has been very gratifying because the organization works to improve college teaching and student learning through collaboration on research and other forms of scholarship," Webster said. "This is consistent with my teaching philosophy: Students learn best by doing significant intellectual work in collaboration with, or under the supervision of, faculty members who are actively engaged in that intellectual work."

"CUR supports undergraduate research in all liberal arts disciplines, from visual and performing arts to physics," Webster explained. "Our goal is to provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge, develop technical and cognitive skills, and produce new knowledge."

Lenox and Webster plan to attend CUR's 31st annual business meeting June 18-20 at Montana State University.

Lenox, who has been with Westminster since 1999, earned an undergraduate degree from Grove City College and master's and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.

Webster, who has been with Westminster since 1983, earned her undergraduate and master's degrees and Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.
