Dr. Robin Lind, Westminster College associate professor of music and director of choral activities, is the guest conductor of the Washington County Chorus for a concert Friday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. at Trinity High School.
The chorus is made up of about 90 students from 13 high schools in Washington County. They met for a day-long rehearsal Feb. 14 and will have another day-long rehearsal the day of the concert.
Lind was invited to conduct by Marsha Owens, director at Trinity High School, who attended a summer music education session at Westminster.
"It is always a challenge, but also a very satisfying experience, to conduct high school music festival choruses where you take students from a variety of music programs and work with them for two or three days to form a cohesive, energized musical ensemble," Lind said. "It is at these festivals that a conductor has the opportunity to help young people strive for excellence and to perform at a higher level than what is usually possible in a single school."
"I have been impressed with the students in the Washington County Chorus from the first rehearsal," Lind added. "They sang well and were attentive. But, more importantly, they understand that excellence comes to those who are dedicated and work hard. I am looking forward to the concert to see how far they can progress with two full days of rehearsal on some very challenging music."
The program includes: "Cantate Domino" by Hans Leo Hassler; "Sure on this Shining Night" by Z. Randall Stroope; "Zigeunerleben" by Robert Schumann; "O My Love's Like a Red, Red Rose" arranged by Rene Clausen; "Workin' for the Dawn of Peace" arranged by Ron Jeffers for men's chorus; "Still I Rise" by Rosephanye Powell for women's chorus; and "Jabula Jesu" by Stephen Hatfield.
The chorus will join with the Washington County Band for a patriotic finale, "An American Tribute" by Douglas E. Wagner.
