Theatre Westminster will present Getting Out, written by Marsha Norman, Feb. 19-22 in Beeghly Theater.
Curtain time Thursday-Saturday is 7:30 p.m.; Sunday's matinee is at 2:30 p.m. Reservations can be made online by following the "ticket reserve" link at www.westminster.edu/drama or by calling the Box Office at (724) 946-7241. Prices for general admission adults are $7, and senior citizens and non-Westminster students are $5.
The student production is under the direction of Cynthia Snodgrass Jones, Westminster adjunct faculty in theatre and coordinator of the Resch/Drinko performing arts summer program, who has extensive acting and directorial experience. She founded the Lakeland Civic Theater, Lakeland Community College's two-year semi-professional training program, and piloted the Mercer County Arts Council and School for the Arts.
The set was designed by guest artist Adel Migid, professor of production design at the University of Akron and winner of several national design awards.
Students in the Technical Theatre and Theatre Practicum classes constructed the set and were involved in design and preparation for the production. They are under the supervision of Paula Ferguson, Westminster visiting lecturer of theatre.
The play centers on a young woman who has recently been released from prison. She is determined to begin a new life, while forces from her past try to drag her back. While struggling to find her way in the present, she cannot escape flashbacks of past experiences with people such as her ex-boyfriend and her uncaring, selfish mother. Her two personalities-"Arlene" in the present and "Arlie" as a young, rebellious girl-are represented by two performers who sometimes appear on stage simultaneously.
Please note: This production is not appropriate for children due to strong language and adult situations.
Dr. Phyllis Kitzerow, Westminster professor of sociology, will lead "Bad Girls," a discussion on the challenges faced by young women trapped by poverty, violence, and an often uncaring legal system, Sunday, Feb. 22, at 1:30 p.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center prior to the matinee.
