Student Competing in Miss Pennsylvania Contest

Posted on Tuesday, February 20, 2007

Sarah Timm, a Westminster College senior music education major from St. Marys, will compete in the 2007 Miss Pennsylvania contest June 23.

Timm was crowned Miss Moraine State of America. The Miss Moraine State/Miss Butler County pageant is an official Miss Pennsylvania of America preliminary pageant.

The pageant's contestants are judged in a 10-minute press-style interview with the judges, talent, swimsuit, evening wear, and onstage question categories.

"It's important that we are well-versed in a platform of our choice, which we pledge to promote as a title-holder," Timm said. "My current platform is titled Go RED! Promoting the American Red Cross in Recruitment and Education for its Dedication to Society.' I plan to recruit more volunteers and raise more awareness for the Red Cross on the local level. Many chapters have low funds and a low number of volunteers to carry out all the wonderful things the Red Cross does. Although the American Red Cross is chartered by Congress to respond to emergencies the country is faced with, they receive no government money. They rely on their fund-raising efforts and the time and commitment of volunteers."

Timm began competing in pageants last summer.

"I chose to become involved in the pageants because I love the competition and the way the pageants make me feel," Timm said. "They give me so much confidence and keep me aware of my strengths and weaknesses in each category of competition. Pageants opened up a whole new world of people and connections to me, which will serve as more avenues for my future careers and goals. The big reason I compete is for the scholarship money awarded to runners-up and winning contestants."

Timm's talent is singing.

"I do a song called, The Girl in 14G' which combines Broadway, opera, and jazz styles of singing to convey different characters throughout the song," Timm said. "It's very entertaining and the audiences and judges really like it."

At Westminster, Timm is currently president of the Westminster Student Admissions Team (SWAT) and president and founder of the new Westminster College American Red Cross Organization. She is also a member of the Concert Choir, Dance Theater, Sigma Kappa Sorority, Mortar Board honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa honor society, Alpha Psi Omega theater honor society, Mu Phi Epsilon music honor society, and senior class gift committee.

"I had to drop some of my activities this semester because of my busy schedule with student teaching and pageants," Timm said. "Throughout my time at Westminster, I was also very involved with the Student Government Association, Campus Programming Committee, Student Alumni Association, and Chamber Singers.

"I am so excited about competing in the Miss Pennsylvania contest. There will be about 24 contestants spending the week of June 17 making personal appearances together during the day and competing in the preliminary competitions in the evenings, which will decide which girls go on to the top 10. Those 10 will compete in all areas again for the title of Miss Pennsylvania and the chance to compete in the Miss America contest."

Timm is a daughter of 1980 Westminster graduate Sheri Strohm Timm and Robert Timm, St. Marys, and a graduate of St. Marys Area High School.
