Political Science Professor Presents Paper on Globalization

Posted on Monday, February 19, 2007

Dr. Edward S. Cohen, Westminster College associate professor of political science, recently presented a paper at the "Globalization Comes Home: How Globalization is Transforming the West" conference held at the University of California, Berkeley.

"I was invited to present my paper, Arguing Over Sovereignty: Globalization and the Structure of Political Conflict in the United States, on the way globalization has impacted understandings of sovereignty in the United States," Cohen said. "I presented my paper on the first day of the conference, which focused on law and politics; the other two days focused on business and the economy and culture and society, respectively. The papers presented at the conference will be published in 2008, in a three-volume set, by Praeger.

"The conference gathered together leading scholars from around the U.S. and Europe, and resulted in a set of extremely stimulating discussions. It was the first major conference to focus on the U.S. as a country that is impacted by globalization, not simply a source of globalization, and thus marks a major step forward in our understanding of the changes being brought about by globalization. The published papers will together amount to a central contribution to the scholarly literature, and, we hope, public discussion about the choices facing the U.S. as we seek to adjust to and control the forces unleashed by globalization."

Cohen, who has been with Westminster College since 1996, earned his undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College, and his master's and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Cohen is chair of the Department of Political Science and Sociology, and chair of Law PAC.
