Symphonic Band to Present "A Lincoln Address" Feb. 23

Posted on Monday, February 19, 2007

The Westminster College Symphonic Band presents "A Lincoln Address" Friday, Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.

Under the direction of Dr. R. Tad Greig, the band will perform Pageant Overture, Easter Morning on the White House Lawn, The Philosopher's Stone, A Lincoln Address, and Dusk.

"Easter Morning on the White House Lawn is not typical of the more well-known John Philip Sousa marches, but is a wonderful snapshot from the early 1900s," Greig said. "Philosopher's Stone is very interesting in that it draws on compositional techniques from medieval through modern times. The narrator's text of A Lincoln Address comes from Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural address."

Greig, who has been with Westminster College since 1995, earned his undergraduate degree from Grove City College, his master's from Youngstown State University, and Ph.D. from Kent State University. As director of instrumental activities and assistant professor of music, Greig is also the conductor of the Wind Ensemble, Titan Marching Band, and the Jazz Ensemble, and instructor of trombone/euphonium. He is in constant demand as a marching band drill designer and plays the trombone with the Youngstown Fine Arts Brass, and Westminster College Faculty Brass. He is past president of the Pennsylvania Collegiate Bandmasters Association and a member of the Collegiate Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, Phi Beta Mu, International Trombonist Association, National Brass Society, Music Educators National Conference, and the Pennsylvania Music Education.

This event is free and open to the public. Contact Greig at (724) 946-7279 or e-mail greigrt@westminster.edu for more information.
