Three Westminster College students received Drinko Center grants to present their research at the Third Annual Undergraduate Literature & Creative Writing Conference at Susquehanna University, Feb. 18-20.
"Enhancing opportunities for undergraduate research is an important component of the work of the Drinko Center in enriching undergraduate education," said Dr. Virginia Tomlinson, Westminster College associate professor of sociology and director of the Drinko Center. "The Undergraduate Research Initiative provides funding for students to conduct research and to present their research at regional and national conferences."
The following Westminster College students received undergraduate travel and presentation grants.
Canonsburg, PA
Sherri Breitigan is a daughter of John and Maureen Breitigan. Breitigan, a senior English major, is a graduate of Canon-McMillan High School. Her paper, "Redefining Lewis Carroll: A Journey from Life to Poetry to Wonderland," explores Carroll's true personality through a psychoanalytic approach to his poetry.
Little Valley, NY
Kathrine Hutchison is a daughter of Bruce and Patti Hutchison. Hutchison, a senior English major, is a graduate of Cattaraugus Central School. Her paper, "Metaphor, Embodiment, and Infusion: Hierarchy in Imagery in Kate Chopin's The Awakening," examines the link between nature imagery and emotion in this novel.
Cranberry Twp., PA
Caitlin Pratt is a daughter of Judy Pratt and Christopher Pratt, Pittsburgh. Pratt, a senior English major, is a graduate of Ambridge Area High School. Her paper, "The Oldest Trick in the Book: Language and Oppression in A Handmaid's Tale and 1984," analyzes language as a tool of the oppression of women in two dystopian novels.
