The Westminster College Planetarium presents "Inner Space Medicine: The Inside Story" March 20-21 and March 27-29 at 7 p.m. in the Hoyt Science Resources Center Planetarium, room 116.

"This new show is a departure from the usual presentation at the planetarium because it explores the complexity, mystery, and grandeur of the universe inside the human body, which mirrors the vast, uncharted realms of outer space" said Dr. G. Samuel Lightner IV, professor and chair of physics at Westminster College.

This 30-minute show, through dramatic multimedia images on the planetarium dome, takes viewers on a breathtaking journey through this often-unseen world.  Audiences travel through the skin, into the arteries, and throughout the body to become eyewitnesses to a host of fascinating processes.  Networks of nerve cells communicate with laser-like speed; coils of DNA unfold to reveal their structure in three-dimensional splendor; the immune system wages its daily battles against parasites, bacteria, and viruses; and antibiotics can be seen attacking and destroying bacteria.

"Viewers can watch as genes are spliced like pieces of film in preparation for gene therapy treatment," said Lightner.  "They will also see how three-dimensional molecular modeling is used to demonstrate the complex procedures by this new medicines are developed."

Following the show, there will be survey of the stars, constellations, and planets currently visible, as well as coming attractions in our sky over the next few months.

The show is free and open to the public, but due to limited seating reservations are required.  Call (724) 946-7200 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to reserve seating.
