Dr. Jacek Fabrykowski, associate professor of mathematics and statistics at Youngstown State University, will talk about "Strategies for Problem Solving" Thursday, Nov. 21, at 4 p.m. in Hoyt Science Resources Center room 152.
"I will describe some commonly used heuristic principles, which often offer a variety of potentially successful strategies for solving many unconventional, nonstandard mathematical problems," said Fabrykowski. "Competition level examples will be provided to illustrate a powerful action of the Invariant Principle, the Box or Pigeonhole Principle, The Extremal Principle, the Principle of Specification and Generation, and the Interpretation Principle. These strategies often reveal the real nature of the problem."
The talk is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Westminster College Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at (724) 946-7284.
