Westminster Professor Keynote Speaker at Korean Conference

Dr. Bryan Rennie, associate professor of religion and philosophy at Westminster College, recently was a keynote speaker at the 60th Annual Conference of the Korean Association for the History of Religious (KAHR) at the Hanshin University in Seoul, Korea.

Rennie gave a presentation on "Mircea Eliade: A Secular Mystic in the History of Religions?" Also giving keynote speeches at this event were Naoki Kashio of Keio University in Japan, and Yoou Sung-Min of Hanshin University.

While in Korea, Rennie also delivered a speech, "The Potential Contribution of non-Western Cultures to the Spirtual Healing of the West: A Meditation on the Thought of Mircea Eliade," at a conference on "Asian Cultures and Healing."

Rennie's Korean travels also took him to Ahjou University, Seoul National University, Sogang University, and the Korean Transpersonal Psychology and Buddhist Studies Group at Seoul Graduate Buddhist University. All of these presentations focused on different aspects of Rennie's work on Micrea Eliade, who he has been studying since 1988. He has published two books and 10 articles on Eliade.

Rennie has written a book, Reconstructing Eliade: Making Sense of Religion, which was translated and reprinted in Romania. He has numerous articles on a variety of religious subjects including Eliade. Rennie, who has been with Westminster since 1994, earned his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
