Volleyball: Titans Hold Off Saint Vincent, Advance to PAC Semifinals

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The no. 4-seeded Westminster College volleyball team won, 3-2, over the no.5-seeded Saint Vincent in the first round of the 2013 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament on Tuesday inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

The Titans (26-8) regrouped after losing 25-12 in the first set and won set two, 25-10, and set three, 25-16. Saint Vincent (16-16) rallied and won set four, 25-23, forcing a set five. Tied 3-3 in the final set, Westminster went on a 12-2 run, which was capped off with a kill from senior Katie Palkovic (Camp Hill, PA / Trinity), to clinch the set and the match, 15-5.

Titan senior Megan Romocean (Ravenna, OH / Southeast) led with a match-high 17 kills and tied a career- and match-high with 21 digs. Also earning a double-double was sophomore Megan Prybyl (Mars, PA / North Catholic) who had 10 kills and 11 digs, to go along with three blocks. Junior Kassie Freyermuth (Allison Park, PA / North Allegheny) and seniors Lexi Starheim (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard) and Rebecca Riemer (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) had 11, nine, and eight kills, respectively. Palkovic led the offense with a match- and season-high 51 assists.

Also earning double-digits in digs were senior Claire Ferrando (North Jackson, OH / Western Reserve) (16), Palkovic (11), and senior Chrissy Volsko (Canfield, OH / Austintown Fitch) (11). Riemer added a team-high five blocks, followed by Starheim with four.

Westminster will play the no. 1-seeded Bethany on Friday at 6 p.m. in the PAC Semifinals in Bethany, W. Va.
