WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's soccer team lost, 2-1, to Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Washington & Jefferson in both team's conference opener on Saturday. The Titans dropped to 5-7 overall, while the Presidents improved to 6-4.
Westminster led early in the first half when sophomore Ethany McCarthy (New Castle, PA / Neshannock) scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the third minute.
The Presidents tied the game, 1-1, with a goal in the 18th minute.
Washington & Jefferson scored the game-winner with less than 10 minutes remaining in the regulation from a cross inside the box.
Both teams had 11 shots on the day.
Titan junior goalie Michael Girata (Monaca, PA / Central Valley) got the loss and moved to 4-4 on the season. Girata earned two saves in 90 minutes.
Sophomore Marcus Gurgiolo (Edinburg, PA / Mohawk Area) led Westminster with three shots, including one on goal.
Westminster will host Bethany on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
