Financial Aid 101

Since its founding in 1852, Westminster College has offered students of all economic backgrounds a superior liberal arts education. There are many financial resources available to students and families who seek assistance. Westminster's programs are divided into two general categories known as gift aid and self-help.

Types of Financial Aid at Westminster College

Financial aid is money to be used in meeting expenses related to the completion of an educational program.

Grant Programs---Gift aid---usually requires need. Gift aid does not require repayment or work in kind.

Low-Interest Loans---Self Help ---Money which you do repay, usually after college.

Employment---Self Help ---Money you can earn through a job during college.

Scholarships---Gift aid, based on academic performance, talent, or achievement in a specific category. Merit scholarships based on ability in music, or theatre may require an audition or tryout with the appropriate department chairperson. These scholarships are offered by Westminster or may be obtained by you from an outside source.

What Kind of Financial Aid Can I Receive?

The financial aid award is based on your individual financial need and eligibility, and may include various types of aid. This is your financial aid package. This package may include any combination of scholarships, grants, loans, or employment. Eligible students meeting required deadlines are offered the maximum amount of aid available after considering external sources such as the Federal Pell Grant, State Grants and non-Westminster college scholarships.


Eligibility Requirements for Federal and State Aid

  • File the FAFSA!
  • Generally, have financial need and a social security number
  • Have a high school diploma, or GED, or have the ability to benefit as demonstrated by and independently administered test
  • Be enrolled as a student in an eligible program
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • Make satisfactory academic progress
  • Register with Selective Service

Male citizens of the U.S. and male immigrant aliens 18 through 25 years old must be registered with the U.S. Selective Service System to be eligible for federal student loans and grants. Men can register at any post office, or register now on line.


Hints and Tips

  • File as soon as possible!
  • Make a copy of all completed forms and applications.
  • Carefully review any requests for additional information and respond to all inquiries promptly and accurately.
  • Request a copy of The Student Guide from the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Keep in touch. Immediately notify the Financial Aid office if there has been a change in your family's financial situation.
  • Remember to re-apply for financial aid and some scholarships each year.
  • You don't have to apply for the full amount of the loan in your financial aid package. Only borrow what you need!
