How do I find the chemistry department?
The department of chemistry is located on the third floor of the Hoyt Science Resource Center. Enter the second floor from the walkway between Patterson Hall and Hoyt. The door to the stairwell is on the left.
Does Westminster’s chemistry department have American Chemical Society approval?
Yes, our program has been approved by the ACS’s Committee on Professional Training. Student’s receive an ACS certified degree upon completion of the chemistry or biochemistry major.
Which chemistry course should I take first?
You will enroll in either CHE111 Foundations of Chemistry or CHE117 Principles of Chemistry. The course you take first is based on your score on Westminster’s chemistry placement exam.
How do I take the chemistry placement exam?
The chemistry placement exam will be mailed to your home address in May or June. You will take the exam at home and return it to us in the envelope provided.
Do you grant AP course credit?
An AP exam score of 4 or 5 gives you course credit for CHE117. An AP exam score of 3 gives you credit for CHE111.

Who teaches the chemistry labs?
Chemistry faculty members teach all of the chemistry courses, including all laboratory courses.
How large are the chemistry classes?
Most chemistry classes are limited to 22 students.
How many students majoring in chemistry/biochemistry are there?
We graduate an average of 12 majors each May.
What opportunities will I have for doing research?
There are research opportunities available every semester. You may begin working with a chemistry professor as early as your second semester at Westminster. All chemistry and biochemistry majors at Westminster complete a research project fall semester of their senior year.
