Explore Service Learning at Westminster College

Westminster students have many opportunities to get involved in our community through student organizations, Greek life, Chapel programs, athletics, Career Center programs, and opportunities through the Drinko Center. In addition, many Westminster faculty offer service-learning courses where service is academically integrated into the content of the course.

“Service enables us to understand ourselves, our neighbors, and society. It is essential to lifelong learning and responsible citizenry. Truly, service is a core principle of the liberal arts curriculum and it lies at the heart of our Mission Statement,” said Dr. Patrick Krantz, Director of the Drinko Center. “Service can encourage and inspire others, it develops leadership skills while enriching your soul. We encourage and incorporate service into our classrooms and in our daily lives and we strive to embrace the opportunity that serving others provides.”

Service-learning is an educational method in which the service is integrated into the course curriculum and requires that the students reflect on their service activity. Service-Learning incorporates the mission of the College in the classroom allowing students to grasp "real-life" experiences in their field of study, while meeting community needs through service. Every semester new and exciting courses are offered at Westminster incorporating a service-learning component into the curriculum.  More than 30 service-learning courses are offered annually.

• Real-world experience helps with career exploration, skill-building, resume-building and networking
• Involvement helps students understand issues, builds their passions, and gives them skills
• Applying abstract concepts or theories to real situations helps students understand course concepts and ask valuable questions
