Mathematics Majors Presented Capstone Results

Six Westminster College senior mathematics majors recently presented the results of their capstone research.

Gregory Clark's research, "A New Technique to Determine the Codensity of a Finite Set of Integers," was advised by Dr. David Offner, assistant professor.  Clark is a son of Jeffrey and Shari Clark of Cranberry Township and a graduate of Seneca Valley High School.

Sarah Fugate presented "Fractals and Fractal Dimension."  Her project was advised by James Anthony, mathematics lecturer.  Fugate is a daughter of Douglas and Beth Fugate of Punxsutawney and a graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School.

Amber Hill presented "Rational Numbers and Their Decimal Expansion," research that was advised by Offner.  Hill is a daughter of Mary Hill of East Palestine, Ohio, and a graduate of East Palestine High School.

Jenna Huston's presentation, "Neural Network Hidden Layer Size," was advised by Offner.  Huston, a dual major in computer science and mathematics, is a daughter of Robert and Robin Huston of Beaver Falls and a graduate of Blackhawk High School.

Brandon Mosley's project, "Ninth Inning Decisions: A Statistical Analysis of the Sacrifice Bunt," was advised by Offner.  Mosley is a son of Carla Stamper of Youngstown, Ohio, and a graduate of East High School.

Emily Walther presented "Properties of Simple, Cubic Graphs That Contain Three Unique Hamiltonian Circuits," advised by Offner.  Walther is a daughter of Jeff and Brenda Walther of Washington and a graduate of Trinity High School.

At Westminster, the final component of liberal studies is a senior study, or capstone, course.  The capstone is a four-semester-hour (minimum) course within the major designed to provide an opportunity for students to evaluate and assess the strengths and limitations of their major field.

The capstone experience permits opportunity for structured reflection on the value of education in and beyond the major and provides an opportunity to strengthen communication and problem-solving skills.
