Westminster College Math Students Attend NCTM Regional Conference and Exposition

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Five Westminster College mathematics majors and two professors attended the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Regional Conference and Exposition in October in Maryland.

The students include:

Stephanie Burkus, a junior, is a daughter of Michael and Teresa Burkus and a graduate of Connellsville Area High School.

Torey DeAngelis, a junior, is a daughter of Lyn DeAngelis of Lyndora and a graduate of Butler Area High School.

Michael Girata, a junior, is a son of John and Bernadette Girata of Monaca and a graduate of Central Valley High School.

Amber Hill, a senior, is a daughter of Mary Hill and a graduate of East Palestine High School.

Shawna Howard, a junior, is a daughter of Robert and Cynthia Howard of Bristolville, Ohio, and a graduate of Bristol High School.

The students were exposed to a wide range of information about the profession and attended sessions on teaching particular topics in subjects from algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, and calculus, to using technology and manipulatives in the classroom.  Other sessions focused on the new Common Core standards for mathematics education being adopted nationwide.  They also attended a session specially designed for people entering the profession and met with pre?service teachers from other schools throughout the East Coast.

Dr. David Offner, assistant professor of mathematics, and Dr. Sararose Lynch, assistant professor of education, also attended the conference.

Lynch presented "Teach Students How to THINK Mathematically" which described a problem solving framework called I-THINK that promotes mathematical communication in elementary, middle, and high school mathematics classrooms during problem-solving activities. Dr. Sararose Lynch co-presented this session with Dr. Jeremy Lynch from Slippery Rock University.
