Posted on Friday, August 23, 2013

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College's Department of Communication Studies, Theatre and Art will host an art gallery opening and reception Thursday, September 5, from 4:30-6 p.m. at the Foster Art Gallery in Patterson Hall. The event is free to the public.

This exhibition will feature artist zines by Dallas-based artist Matthew Guest. The reception will include a gallery talk by the artist at 5:15 p.m.

Zines are small circulations of self-published material. In his case, Guest's zines include original drawings and writing that pull from a wide variety of influences, some of which include comics, science fiction, surrealism, Dutch still life and slasher films, among many others. This exhibition will include his current zine, Apocalypth Pentagram, in printed pamphlet form, as well as select pages from the zine displayed on the walls.

The exhibition will run Aug. 21-Sept. 20.  The Art Gallery is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.  The Foster Art Gallery hosts six exhibits annually, one of which is the student/senior exhibit in March. Regional, national, and international artists are also brought to campus for exhibits and lectures.

Guest is an interdisciplinary artist based in the Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas.  He holds a BFA in printmaking from Texas Christian University and received an MFA in painting from the University of South Florida.  His books, objects, paintings, prints, and drawings have been exhibited and published nationally and internationally, most notably at the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa, and by Fantagraphics Books, located in Seattle, Washington.
