Westminster College Assistant Professor Presents Research on Teaching Students to Think Mathematically

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Dr. Sararose Lynch, assistant professor of education, presented research in math education at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Annual Conference in April in Denver.

Lynch presented "Teach Students How to Think Mathematically" and described a problem solving framework I-THINK that promotes mathematical communication in elementary, middle, and high school mathematics classrooms during problem-solving activities. Dr. Sararose Lynch co-presented this session with Dr. Jeremy Lynch from Slippery Rock University. Sararose and Jeremy have researched this framework and Sararose is currently helping a local second-grade teacher at New Wilmington Elementary implement this framework in her classroom.

Sararose Lynch earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics and secondary mathematics education from West Virginia Wesleyan College and a master's in rehabilitation counseling and Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction from West Virginia University. Her K-12 public education experience includes serving as a mathematics and gifted education teacher, emotional and behavioral support special education teacher, and as a transition counselor at the Maryland State Department of Education.
