Westminster College Music Education Major to Present at National Conference

Posted on Friday, April 26, 2013

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College senior music education major Deanna Nebel recently proposed a poster session to the College Music Society (CMS) National Conference. The poster was accepted and Nebel will be presenting it in October in Cambridge, Mass.

Nebel's poster "Reviving Scottish Fiddling: An Ethnographic Study of Scottish Fiddling Competitions in the United States" is based on an independent study project in ethnomusicology under the direction of Dr. Daniel Perttu, assistant professor of music theory and composition.

The CMS is the only interdisciplinary professional service organization in music. The CMS National Conference is a highly competitive professional conference to which fewer than 25 percent of proposals are typically accepted.

"This is quite an extraordinary honor for Deanna," Perttu said. "Music professors at advanced stages of their careers hope for acceptance into a national College Music Society conference. For her to achieve this as an undergraduate is truly exceptional."

Nebel will be attending the Kent State University Hugh A. Glauser School of Music next year, where she will be pursuing a master's degree in ethnomusicology. She will be working as a graduate teaching assistant, and in exchange for teaching undergraduate courses, she will receive a stipend and a full tuition waiver.

Nebel is a daughter of Cheryl Kaufman of Pittsburgh and John Nebel, Turtle Creek, and a graduate of Woodland Hills High School.
