Senior Art Show at Westminster College Foster Art Gallery

Posted on Wednesday, February 27, 2013

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Six Westminster College senior art students will be presenting select work from their portfolios March 4-29 in Patterson Hall's Foster Art Gallery. A reception will be held March 16 from 2-4 p.m.

The Senior Art Show features the works of both fine art and media art students. In addition to work created during their first three years of studies, students also have an opportunity to showcase a project created in their senior capstone. Capstone is a senior-level course within the major designed to provide an opportunity for students to work independently with Westminster College fine art and media art faculty to assess their cumulative body of work and make appropriate adjustments to prepare a professional art or media art portfolio.

The greatest strength of this year's show is the diversity of the type of work and disciplines represented by the following Westminster College seniors:

Andrea Abercrombie, a media art major, is a daughter of Keith and Dana Abercrombie of Acton, Calif., and a graduate of Paraclete High School. She has chosen to showcase a variety of her photography, the majority of which is focused on nature and wildlife. Deeply inspired by environments encountered during travel, Abercrombie hopes to illustrate the unique creatures and spaces in a way that creates a feel of respect and awe.

Victoria Ludwig, an English and fine art major, is a daughter of Richard and Grace Ludwig and a graduate of Mercer Area High School. Her project is inspired by a personal animation project she hopes to make into an animated series. It shows the journey of an explorer who travels to another world and documents his findings through journal entries that hang from a structure resembling primitive architecture from that world. Ludwig has used this project as an opportunity to explore the world in which her animation takes place and further develop the concept.

Emily McElroy, a media art major, is a daughter of David and Patti McElroy of Pittsburgh and a graduate of North Allegheny High School. Her presentation will include 36 photographs. The subjects are varied to include the many subjects she is passionate about capturing in a photograph. McElroy loves to capture small moments with her photographs, whether they are of people, nature, or the many other beautiful things that surround us every day.

Anna Price, a fine art major, is a daughter of Richard Price and Georgianna LaRocque-Price of Elmira, N.Y., and a graduate of Horseheads High School. Her capstone explores how emotions overlap and intersect. It also is to strengthen her portfolio. Price would like to become an art therapist, so the emotion series was a way to explore art as a form of expression and healing.

Bryan Thompson, a media art major, is a son of Larry and Cheryl Thompson of Bellbrook, Ohio, and a graduate of Bellbrook High School. His capstone presentation includes a variety of graphic design pieces ranging from logos, packaging, illustration and advertisements. The compilation of his work was formed from time spent at Westminster and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.

Michael Wilkinson, a media art major, is a son of Reuben and Brenda Wilkinson of Millersville, Md., and a graduate of Old Mill High School. Most of his skills lie within Adobe Illustrator as seen in many of his projects and his illustrations. Wilkinson enjoys trying new things with his designs, learning what different design tools do, and how by using them he can create something no one has seen before.

In addition to the capstone presentations, the students present at appropriate regional or national conferences, and at Westminster's Undergraduate Research and Arts Celebration April 24.  This showcase for student creative and research efforts will feature the work of more than 200 Westminster students, who will present posters, oral presentations, documentaries, art projects, and performances.
