Westminster College Offers Spring Continuing Education Classes

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College announces several personal enrichment and leisure courses for community residents, covering interests ranging from understanding fly tying to glass painting and learning a new language.

Continuing Education classes and seminars are non-credit and are open to all interested individuals.  Formal admission to Westminster College is not required.

Nine personal enrichment classes are included this semester:

Wintertime Glass Painting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 18, from 5:30-9 p.m. in Hoyt Science Center, room 206.  Participants should bring a blow dryer and a small fan brush.

Intermediate Knitting is scheduled for Tuesdays, Feb. 26 and March 12 and 19, from 6-7:30 p.m. in McGill Library's Robinson Room.  Learn to knit cables, to read cable charts, pick up stitches for necklines and button bands and block cable knitting while making a cozy cable knit hat. Participants will need size 9 and 10 knitting needles; 1 skein worsted weight yearn (120 yards) in a light color and 1 cable needle.

Introduction to Playing Bridge is scheduled for Wednesdays, Feb.27 and March 6, 13 and 20, from 6-8 p.m. in the McKelvey Campus Center, room 253. Learn the basic concepts of bidding and card play in the game of Bridge.

Portrait Painting is scheduled for Wednesdays, March 6, 13 and 20. Learn how to capture the model's likeness during several live sittings. Local artist JG McGill will lecture and demonstrate methods for using pastels in portraits showing tech gestures to bring out the sitter's personality with pastel on paper.

Glass Painting/Grapes is scheduled for Wednesday, March 27, from 5:30-9 p.m. in Hoyt Science Center, room 206. Learn the technique of painting grapes with sponge tools. Participants will need to bring an item to paint (wine goblets, trays, Christmas ornaments, white or clear glass) and a fine paint brush.

Fly Fishing Instruction and Fly Tying is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursdays, March 5, 7, 12 and 14, from 6:30-8 p.m. in Hoyt Science Center, room 206. This class will provide the fundamental abilities of understanding insect entomology, fly tying techniques and an introduction to fly fishing concepts and strategies. A material list will be provided upon registering for class.

Conversational German is scheduled for Tuesdays, April 2, 9, 16 and 23, from 6-8 p.m. Learn how to converse in various real-life situations. Pronunciation and some basic structure of the language will also be a focus.

Advanced Fly Tying and Flyrod Casting is scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 2, 4, 9 and 11, from 6:30-8 p.m. in Hoyt Science Center, room 206. This class is the continuation of our fly fishing education. It will primarily focus on more advanced fly tying methods, as well as the art of flyrod casting. A material list will be provided upon registering for class.

Handweaving is scheduled for Thursday, April 11, from 6-8 p.m. in McGill Library in the Robinson Room. Learn the basics of handweaving and complete a simple project. Materials are included.

Personal fitness classes are scheduled in four sessions:  Session A started Jan. 23 and runs through Feb. 26; session B runs from Feb. 20 through March. 26; session C runs from March 21 through April 23, and session D runs from April 24 through May 21. Classes are held in the dance studio in Old 77.

Cardio/Strength Blast classes run all four sessions on Tuesdays from 6-7 p.m. This class is designed for various fitness levels from low to high. Your cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility will be utilized to burn calories and get fit. Light weight dumbbells are recommended but not required.

Prop-Based Yoga classes run all four sessions on Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. This style of yoga uses props such as blocks and straps to aid in achieving alignment and stability in each pose.

Hatha Yoga is scheduled for sessions A, B, and C on Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m.  Participants learn how to improve their strength, balance, respiration, and fitness level by stretching and strengthening muscles, joints, and spine.  Participants should bring a yoga mat. A blanket, yoga strap, and yoga blocks are optional.

Line Dancing is scheduled for Mondays, Feb. 25, March 4, 11 and 18, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.  Learn basic steps, plus the Electric Slide and Boot Scootin' Boogie, just to name a few.

Computer classes are designed to meet the needs of the beginner to the accomplished user. All computer classes are hands-on workshops and are held in either Thompson Clark or Patterson Hall.

Getting to Know Your Computer is scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays, Feb. 25, 28 and March 4, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Thompson Clark, room 205. This introductory class will cover terminology, using the mouse, and Windows 2007, while touching on Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and the Internet.

Microsoft Word 2010 is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursdays, April 2, 4, 9 and 11, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Thompson Clark, room 205.  This class is for students who have some computer experience with typing and using the mouse.  Participants will learn the Microsoft Word 2010 version while referring to an earlier version of the program.

Microsoft PowerPoint is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in Thompson Clark, room 205. Learn to use information from the Internet on your presentations and to insert, crop and format pictures.

Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2010 is scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays, April 22, 25 and 29, from 5:30-8 p.m. in Thompson Clark, room 205.  This introductory class covers formatting, terminology, and how to use auto sum.
