Chemistry Major Received Drinko Research Grant

Posted on Friday, April 1, 2011

Westminster College sophomore chemistry major Jaimie Daum received an undergraduate research grant from Westminster's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Daum's independent study project, "Rare Earth Metals in Samarium-Cobalt Magnets," is conducted under the supervision of Dr. Peter Smith, Westminster associate professor of chemistry.

The goal is to find a cost-efficient way to separate and purify the valuable samarium component of series 2:17 samarium-cobalt magnets that contain two atoms of samarium for every 13-17 atoms of transition metals, which are mostly cobalt.

"This research experience has been indescribable," Daum said.  "I never believed I would enjoy research as much as I do and had planned to go into the field of forensic chemistry after graduation.  However, after participating in the research project with Dr. Smith, I find myself more interested in inorganic research and want to pursue that."

Daum is a daughter of Warren and Darby Daum of Butler and a graduate of Butler Area High School.

The Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning was created to enrich undergraduate education at Westminster through advancing world-class teaching as well as by participating in collaborations that address community and regional needs including strengthening K-12 education.  The Undergraduate Research Initiative provides funding for students to conduct research and to present their research at regional and national conferences.  Visit www.westminster.edu/drinko for more information about the Drinko Center and its programs.
