Christian Education Professor and Students Attended Church Educators Conference

Posted on Tuesday, March 1, 2011

Dr. Beverly Cushman, Westminster College associate professor of religion and Christian education, and two senior Christian education majors attended the Association of Presbyterian Church Educators (APCE) "Walking in Balance" annual conference Feb. 2-5 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

"Unlike most academic conferences, the APCE offers workshops, not papers or poster centers," Cushman said.  "We were able to attend several workshops on various subjects dealing with the formation of mature Christians.  The conference also offered the students a view of the much bigger picture of what it means to be a Christian educator in this time of significant change in congregational life."

"In addition, the conference offers a ‘Face-to-Face' opportunity in which potential employers and employees can meet.  One of our students had an interview with a promising placement on this trip," Cushman added.

"Attending APCE was an incredible experience," said Westminster senior Tawni Conley.  "Through this conference God has shown me the path He wants me to take."

Conley is a daughter of Patrick and Lauren Conley of Finleyville and a graduate of Wilson Christian Academy.

Also attending was Westminster senior Molly Roberts.  She is a daughter of David and Jamie Roberts of Wheeling, W.Va., and a graduate of Wheeling Park High School.

Part of the funding for the trip was administered through Westminster's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.  The Drinko Center was created to enrich undergraduate education at Westminster through advancing world-class teaching as well as by participating in collaborations that address community and regional needs including strengthening K-12 education.  Visit www.westminster.edu/drinko for more information about the Drinko Center and its programs.
