Westminster College to Welcome Three Distinguished Alumni Lecturers Oct. 17

Three Westminster alumni-Gwendolyn Myron Brunner, Kathryn Lynn McConnell, and Alan D. Smith-will present Distinguished Alumni lectures Friday, Oct. 17.

Smith, a 1977 Westminster graduate, will present "Turmoil in Financial Markets" at 2 p.m. in Phillips Lecture Hall of the Hoyt Science Resources Center.

Smith, who has been with Citibank for almost 25 years, is the chief operating officer, global business head for Issuer Services (one of three business lines), and head of electronic markets (information products). He holds an MBA from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and served the U.S. Congress as an analyst for the Senate Budget Committee.

Smith said, "My objectives with the [Westminster] presentation are to present a primer on the investment industry and to provide a framework for thinking about the recent turmoil in the financial markets."

Brunner, a 1996 Westminster graduate, will speak on "Physics and Cancer" at 4:15 p.m. in Hoyt Science Resources Center 152.

Brunner is a University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine volunteer clinical faculty instructor and a medical physicist at the University of Pittsburgh's Cancer Institute and its Cancer Center. She earned a master's in radiological medical physics from the University of Kentucky and has been practicing clinical medical physics for nearly 10 years. She is a member of the American Association of Medical Physicists and is board certified by the American Board of Radiology.

McConnell, a 1984 Westminster graduate, will speak at 11:30 a.m. in Patterson Hall room 306.

McConnell's design career includes nearly 25 years in Washington, D.C., mostly notably as design director at Time-Life Books and Trade Publishing; design director for Smithsonian Press; and art director for People for the American Way, leading to her own design firm, Great Blue Graphics. She is currently an instructor at The Corcoran College of Art and Design, where she has been an adjunct faculty member since 2000.
