About Me

Dr. Withington has just arrived from Christchurch, New Zealand, and joins the School of Music as Visiting Assistant Professor and Director of Choral Activities.

He has conducted choirs of all levels – elementary, high school, college and community. As Artistic Director of the internationally acclaimed New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir (NZSSC), he conducted concerts in Canada, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and South Africa. At the 2010 International Choral Kathaumixw, the choir received ‘The People’s Choice Award’ and first place in the adult mixed choir competition. NZSSC returned to Kathaumixw in 2016 as the invited Guest Choir, and in 2018, were resident artists at The Belt and Road International Choir Festival in Hong Kong. At these two choral competitions, Dr. Withington was a member of the international jury.

Dr. Withington holds a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honors, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Music (Choral Pedagogy), from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand; and a Master of Music with First Class Honors in Performance (Choral Conducting) from the University of Auckland. He is a trained elementary school teacher and has been a lecturer at the University of Canterbury School of Music and College of Education, and a teacher educator at the New Zealand Graduate School of Education.
