Orchestra Auditions
Auditions will take place immediately prior to the start of classes in the Fall.
As in the past, all orchestra members must audition.
Westminster's Symphony Orchestra performs several concerts a year from standard symphonic orchestral repertoire. The ensemble meets every Tuesday from 5:20-8:30 and it has the option of being taken for VP credit (MUS 441V), standard 1-credit (MUS 441), or for 0-credit (MUS 541).
All of the audition music is self-selected. In other words, choose something from your own repertoire that showcases your best playing. Try to select excerpts that will demonstrate your technical and musical playing.
Strings: Will audition for section and seating placement via online auditions immediately prior to the start of classes in the Fall. Since the auditions will be held online, you may make an appointment for a time slot during the full week immediately prior to the start of classes with Dr. Crawford Perttu. Please see below for more information.
Woodwind/Brass/Percussion: Will audition for the orchestra via the combined Wind Ensemble/Orchestra auditions that will be held (in person) immediately prior to the beginning of classes. Please watch for more information about this coming from Dr. Himes and for the sign-up sheet that will be found on his office door.
String Auditions are for section and seating placement.
All of the string audition music is self-selected. In other words, choose something from your own repertoire that showcases your best playing. Repertoire to consider can be something that you have previously played, something from last semester’s jury, or something that you are working on with your studio (private) teacher. Regardless of repertoire selected, please try to select excerpts that will demonstrate both your technical and musical playing.
String auditions will be held online during the full week immediately prior to the start of classes. The audition will take place over Zoom and will only take approximately 10 minutes.
Important: Zoom is free, but please make certain you have the “original sound” setting enabled in your own Zoom account so you can toggle it on for your audition.
Please email Dr. Crawford Perttu to make an appointment. Please schedule your audition time well before your preferred audition day in order to receive your preferred audition time. (In other words: do not procrastinate!!)
Freshmen: Please schedule your audition around any Orientation or move-in commitments.
Please note: There will NOT be an on-campus sign-up sheet for string auditions. Appointments will be made only via email.
The Zoom link will be sent out via email when the audition appointment is confirmed.
