Music with Friends concert features Wind Ensemble, Blackhawk Symphonic Band

NEW WILMINGTON, PA – The Westminster College School of Music will present a Music with Friends concert featuring the Blackhawk Symphonic Band and the Westminster College Wind Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 22, in the Will W. Orr Auditorium.
The Blackhawk Symphonic Band, under the direction of Westminster 2002 alumnus David Zaccari, will perform “Jubilancelation!” by Richard L. Saucedo, “Mazama” by Jay Chattaway, “The Battle Pavane” by Tielman Susato and “Russian Christmas Music” by Alfred Reed.
The Westminster College Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. R. Tad Greig, professor of music and director of instrumental activities, will perform “Up” by Anthony O’Toole and “City Trees” by Michael Markowski.
The Wind Ensemble will also offer a world premiere performance of two movements from Joshua Hobbs’ Keystone Landscapes—“Rolling Hills and Wilderness” and “Land of Steel”—will feature guest soloist Dr. Timothy Winfield, assistant professor of music at Westminster College, on trumpet.
Hobbs has been hailed as one of the rising stars in the world of composition. His music has been performed across the globe by various ensembles such as the United States Air Force Band, the New England Conservatory and the Saint Louis Brass.
The Wind Ensemble will also present an Eastern United States premiere of four movements from Wendell Yuponce’s Letters from the Heartland. The four movements include “Provenance,” “Knee High by the Fourth” — featuring a solo horn performance by Heather Johnson, adjunct professor of horn at Westminster—“Nightfall” and “Harvest Celebration.”
A veteran of music for television, film and advertising, Yuponce is known for the hit HBO show, “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” as well as having been the musical director and segment composer for the Screen Actors Guild Awards on NBC. His numerous credits include original scores for shows on Comedy Central, FOX, ABC and NBC.
