Andrew Kearney, junior environmental science major at Westminster College, received the Helen R. Ferguson Scholarship for excellence in environmental science at the annual Bartramian Audubon Society Awards Ceremony on Monday, May 14, 2018. The ceremony was held at the Jennings Environmental Education Center in Slippery Rock, Pa.
The scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in environmental science who has demonstrated excellence in the areas of environmental science and education. Dr. Patrick Krantz, associate professor of environmental science, introduced Kearney as part of the awards ceremony.
“The Environmental Science Committee selected Andrew because of academic achievements in his coursework and his commitment to environmental issues outside of the classroom,” said Dr. Helen Boylan, professor of chemistry and program coordinator of environmental science. “Andrew has been a dedicated member of Westminster’s ALLARM water quality outreach program for two years.”
Kearney was also selected for an internship this summer with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection where he will be collecting and testing surface water samples as part of water pollution control in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Kearney is a son of Bill and Beth Kearney of Cranberry Township, Pa., and a graduate of Seneca Valley High School.
