Westminster’s Foster Art Gallery is the third stop of the “Crowns” touring art exhibition featuring the work of eight ceramic artists. From April 3 to May 4, eight different artists’ pottery, sculptures and mixed-media works that reflect on the experiences of motherhood will be available for viewing.

The exhibition was originally organized by Jessica Gardner for a show in Pittsburgh during the National Council for Education in the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference in March and has since expanded to include seven other venues during 2018 and 2019. The featured artists include assistant professor of art Summer Zickefoose, Stephanie DeArmond, Carole Epp, Kate Fisher, Jessica Gardner, Eva Kwong, Janis Mars Wunderlich and Rhonda Willers.

Zickefoose included a part of her larger project, “Cockleburs and Pleasantries,” in the exhibition. The piece she provided incorporates quotes relating to motherhood from women’s diaries on ceramic cups filled with materials that contrast or expand the ideas expressed on the cups.

“I do believe that contemporary experiences of motherhood are an important theme to explore in art as are so many other themes that relate to lived experience and first-person accounts translated through visual art,” Zickefoose said.

The exhibition will travel around the Eastern United States throughout the year and stop at renowned galleries such as the New Gallery for Contemporary Art in Woodbridge, VA, and the Canton Museum of Art in Canton, OH.

“At its best, art can reflect our world in a way that allows us to slow down, consider or reveal the nuances of our experiences,” Zickefoose said. “This could be beauty seen through color or form, the craft traditions of indigenous cultures or the historical meaning embedded in a material or object used in a work of art.”

For the rest of the month, students, faculty and community members are invited to view the motherhood-related pieces and reflect on the particularities of their own experiences before it moves to the next location.

The Foster Art Gallery is open Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
