Dr. Julie DeLoia, a 1981 Westminster college graduate and distinguished biology lecturer, will speak Friday, Oct. 17, at 4:30 p.m. in Phillips Lecture Hall of the Hoyt Science Resources Building.

Speaking on "The Human Genome Project on Clinical Medicine," DeLoia will discuss what scientists have achieved and how those discoveries are changing the face of medicine.

"Under the traditional systems of medicine, physicians diagnose diseases and treat them," DeLoia said. "With this new approach, physicians are able to predict who is susceptible to a disease in time to prevent it. These advances will have a broad impact on healthcare and society."

DeLoia is currently director of research at the Ovarian Cancer Center of Excellence at the Magee Women's Research Institute, and associate professor of cell biology and physiology at the University of Pittsburgh.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Ann E. Throckmorton, chair and associate professor of biology, at (724) 946-7209 or e-mail athrock@westminster.edu.
