South African Economist to Speak at Westminster Diversity Symposium

Posted on Tuesday, November 4, 2003

Dr. Mzamo Mangaliso, associate professor at the University of Massachusetts, will speak at the Westminster Diversity Symposium Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. at the Hoyt Science Resources Center Phillips Lecture Hall.

"This is a great opportunity to meet and hear from a black South African who grew up under Apartheid, but is, like so many of his fellow citizens, strongly committed to rebuilding a country that embraces all the diversity that his country has to offer," said Dr. Kent Carter, associate professor of business administration and Captain William McKee Chair of Economics and Business at Westminster College.

Mangaliso, who is a professor of business policy and strategy, believes that higher education is about creating an environment where intellectually challenging discourse can take place, and knowledge can be transferred back and forth between teacher and student.

"We live in turbulent, cutting edge times, where past assumptions cannot be taken to be valid," Mangaliso said. "A successful pedagogical experience is one where participants leave the encounter with more questions than answers."

Mangaliso's research interests include: strategic planning under uncertainty; globalization and its implications; ethics and corporate social responsibility. He is widely published on these subjects in various professional journals. He has received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the University of Massachusetts, the Outstanding College Teacher Award from the Isenberg School of Management, and the Lilly Teaching Fellow from the University of Massachusetts.

This is the third in a series of Diversity Symposiums at Westminster College. The events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Carter at (724) 946-7164 or e-mail carterkd@westminster.edu.
