Commemorating the tenth anniversary of her passing, at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, Westminster College’s Field Station will host a labyrinth walk, remembering Sandra May Edmiston ’05. The Sandra May Edmiston Memorial Labyrinth is located at 937 Fayette-New Wilmington Road.

Etched on a plaque that greets every incoming walker of the Labyrinth are words from her senior English department portfolio: “To live anew in colors that fade as leaves return to the Earth.”

“There will be those who knew Sandy…and those who did not; those who may be rock climbers …and those who prefer terra firma; those who like sunshine…and those who prefer shade,” said Clarence Harms, director of the Field Station. “But, all who love God, nature and people, any or all of the above, are welcome to share the Labyrinth and give tribute to Sandy.”

Edmiston died on August 1, 2005 in a rock climbing accident at Rodeo Wall in Teton Country, Wyoming.

Chosen by her graduating class as their senior commencement speaker, on May 14, 2005, Edmiston shared inspirational words with her classmates.

“As we move away from this place, be it running or walking or kicking and screaming, I hope we feel that we are going away in a new grace, a new beauty, and are ready to do something in this broken, beautiful world.”

The Labyrinth was built by family, friends, and collogues in her name on July 15, 2006 and was dedicated on October 22 of that year.

“Sandy was full of life, spirit and commitment; an adventurer and without exception a kindred spirit of anyone who loves God, nature and people,” said Harms. “We gained, through the loving support of hundreds of friends, the Labyrinth that will continue to bring folks together who, likewise, love God, nature and people. As we come to the 10th anniversary of Sandy’s untimely death, we will celebrate her life well lived.”
