Symphony Orchestra to Present Concert

Posted on Friday, February 20, 2015

The Westminster College Symphony Orchestra will present a concert Friday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.  The event is free and open to the public.

The program includes "Overture" to The Barber of Seville by G. Rossini; "Valse Triste" by J. Sibelius; "Allegro Moderato" from Piano Cencerto No. 4 in G Major by L. van Beethoven; and "Blanik" from Ma Vlast by B. Smetana.

Westminster music faculty participating in the orchestra are Dr. Robert Knop, associate professor, on viola; Dr. Daniel Perttu, associate professor and chair of Westminster's Department of Music, on bassoon; and Dr. Timothy Winfield, assistant professor, on trumpet.

The orchestra is conducted by Dr. Melinda Crawford Perttu, assistant professor of Music.

"This program is very much about contrasts, encompassing comedic music as well as the tragic; elements of the heroic, and of the sublime," shares Crawford Perttu. "We are particularly thrilled to have Dr. Nancy DeSalvo soloing with us. It provides such a wonderful opportunity for the students to collaborate with the faculty on a professional level performance."

Crawford Perttu, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2009, directs the symphony orchestra and the Ceól na Teud Scottish string music group, teaches the string pedagogy sequence as well as private violin and viola lessons, and supervises the weekly string master class. She earned an undergraduate degree from Duquesne University and a master's and doctorate from the Ohio State University.
