Professors Presented at Philosophical Society

Westminster College faculty Dr. Bryan Rennie, professor of religion, and Dr. David Goldberg, associate professor of philosophy, presented papers at the fall meeting of the West Virginia Philosophical Society (WVPS) Oct. 24-25 at the Altoona campus of The Pennsylvania State University (PSU).

Rennie, the keynote speaker, presented "The Philosophy of Religion: Philosophical Theology or the Reasoned Study of Institutionalized Ritual and Belief?"

Goldberg, who serves as president of WVPS, shared "Why Philosophy? Why Now?" an examination of the state of philosophy via an historical reflection on how the discipline evolved to what it is today.

Additional presenters were from PSU, University of Pittsburgh, University of Cincinnati, Marshall University and Ashland University.

Rennie, who holds the Vira I. Heinz chair in religion, has been with Westminster since 1992.  He earned an undergraduate degree, master's degree, and Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.  His research interests focus on the works of Mircea Eliade, about whom he has authored four books and numerous articles.

Goldberg, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2002, earned undergraduate and master's degrees from The Pennsylvania State University and Ph.D. from Duquesne University.
