Posted on Wednesday, October 1, 2014

The Westminster College Planetarium will host screenings of three shows in October and November.

"One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure" will be shown Saturday, Oct. 18, at 3:30 and 5 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 8, at 2:30 p.m.  Suitable for children aged three-six, viewers can explore the night sky with their favorite Sesame Street characters Big Bird and Elmo and their friend from China, Hu Hu Zhu.

"Stars," suitable for ages six-adult, will be shown Saturday, Oct. 18, at 6:30 and 8 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 8, at 5:30 and 7 p.m.  Explore the lives of stars, how they are born, how they die and how human understanding of them has changed over time.  Rooftop stargazing will follow each presentation, weather permitting.

"Secret of the Cardboard Rocket," appropriate for audiences aged five-10, will be shown Saturday, Nov. 8, at 4 p.m.  The show follows a young girl and boy who turn a cardboard box into a rocket for a daring adventure that introduces children to the solar system.  Viewers will learn what a planet is, how the planets differ from each other, and why Earth is a special place.

Visit the planetarium website for details on all planetarium shows and special lectures.

The programs are free and open to the public.  However, reservations are necessary due to limited seating.  Reservations, including private showings for larger groups, can be made by contacting Westminster's Physics Department at 724-946-STAR (7827) Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m-4:30 p.m., or completing the online form.
